Mansfield Schools’ Under 13’s began their season in the E.S.F.A District league with an away trip against Derby Schools in Littleover. Mansfield played out a 3 – 2 defeat in their first outing the previous week to a very strong Sheffield Boys team. The team finished strong in the previous game and started lively against a good Derby Schools team. Mansfield’s tempo was set by some excellent play by Charlie Moon and some great interchange of passes down the right hand side between Brad Holmes and Ryan Herbert. The pressure finally paid off when a skillful run and good cross by Kieran Blaney found its way directly into the Derby keepers net. Mansfield’s momentum stalled soon after when Derby’s right winger found space on the edge of the 18 yard box and unleashed a powerful drive that found the back of the Mansfield net. Mansfield bounced back with some good play and outstanding team work. Kieran Blaney led the line very well, causing lots of problems for Derby’s defense with dangerous runs and powerful strikes on goal. Mansfield maintained the high tempo at the start of the second half and were rewarded when a Kieran Blaney cross from the left found the feet of Ryan Herbert, who calmly slotted home to make it 2 – 1 to Mansfield. Mansfield battled out the rest of the game and comfortably held out for a much deserved victory in their first league game of the season. Tom Slone and Charlie Moon were the stand out players in a very organised and impressive display by Mansfield. We will be looking to continue our promising start to the season against Leicester Boys at Ashfield School on October 23rd.
